The ancient cities of Uzbekistan are treasure-troves of Central Asian wonders, and linking them is the Orient Silk Road Express, a private train which travels in a grand loop from the capital, Tashkent. Depart the UK on your flight to Tashkent.
Arrive in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)
Explore Tashkent and discover how its location on the old Silk Road still influences its history today. In the evening enjoy a local music performance. Transfer to the station to board the train and enjoy dinner on board. (B,L,D)
Waking in rural Uzbekistan you head today in to the mountains to visit some Uzbek villages. In the afternoon your train brings you to Shakrisabz. (B,L,D)
Arrive in Samarkand. Visit Registan Square and discover the impressive collection of Central Asian architecture. Spend time at Samarkand’s excavation sites of Afrosiab and the tombs of Shah-i-zinda (the living king). (B,L,D)
Visit the Ulugh Beg Observatory as well as the Bibi Khanum Mosque, now partly in ruins after many earthquakes. You will also meet some of the city’s craftsmen, take a tour of a silk carpet manufactory, and visit to an Uzbek family to see paper being made from mulberry bark. Also visit the tomb of Amir Timur, lying beneath a large turquoise dome. (B,L,D)
The morning is at leisure for you to explore Samarkand further. Around noon you will head back to the station to board the train which will depart to the ancient city of Khiva. Overnight on the train. (B,L,D)
Today you will visit the oasis of Khiva and take in its exotic atmosphere. Its palaces, mosques, minarets, mausoleums, and madrassahs represent one of the best-preserved ensembles of medieval oriental urban architecture in the world. This afternoon, visit the Konya Ark Citadel and the Islam Hodha Minaret. (B,L,D)
The second day in Khiva really gives you time to explore this ancient city. Enjoy lunch in the surroundings of the former Emir’s Summer Palace. Head on to Bukhara overnight. (B,L,D)
Bukhara has some one thousand architectural monuments recalling the golden age of the Great Silk Route. Your tour will take in Bukhara’s old city, where you see the Poi Kalon Minaret and the Lyabi Hauz Ensemble. Later head for the courtyard of one of the madrassahs to enjoy a performance of local dances, and a presentation of colourful national costumes with musical accompaniment. (B,L,D)
In the morning, drive to the Mir-e-Arab Madrassah and the Samanid Mausoleum, one of Central Asia’s most beautiful architectural treasures. Afterwards, tour the massive Ark Citadel. There you view the Throne Room, after which you visit the last emir’s Summer Residence. (B,L,D)
Have the morning free to explore Bukhara before getting the train back to Tashkent where you will be transferred to the hotel for your final night. (B,L,D)
Transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK. (B)
