This encompassing self-drive journey takes you through the South West for spectacular ocean views, fascinating forests and historic towns, before heading east to Cairns and heading down the Sunshine way to experience the spectacular natural beauty of Australia. Fly over to Auckland and drive through the beautiful North Island before catching the ferry to the South Island discovering this amazingly unique land.
Depart London to arrive in Perth the next day. On arrival pick up your car hire and head towards Bunbury and perhaps stop at the Dolphin Discovery Centre before continuing to Busselton, home of the southern hemispheres longest jetty. Then it’s on to Margaret River
On your free day spend some time exploring the area.
Next, it’s on to Augusta. Stop at the windswept lighthouse of Cape Leeuwin to witness the meeting of the Indian and Great Southern Oceans. Continue your journey to the ‘Tall Timber Country’ of Pemberton, stopping off at Northcliffe. Drive to the Valley of the Giants, a forest of gigantic tingle trees. Continue to Albany. (B)
Day at leisure to discover Albany. Step back in time and explore convict jails, old taverns, whaling ship and National Trust homes. Perhaps follow the Amity Trail, a 30 minute self-guided walk that takes you past historical buildings of note.
Head back to Perth on the Albany Highway, perhaps stopping at the Stirling Range National Park or the historic settlement of York.
Today you'll return your car in Perth and board a flight to Cairns. On arrival you'll pick up your car hire and drive into the rainforest to Cape Tribulation. This is where the rainforest truly meets the sea in a spectacular style.
Drive through the country town of Innisfail and Cairns before arriving at Port Douglas. The perfect chance to take a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef.
Continue following the picturesque Queensland coastline, through the towns of Ingham, known as Little Italy to the stunning little town of Mission Beach. Why not take a trip to the markets or visit Paronella Park?
Travel south to Townsville; a modern tropical city and the administrative capital of North Queensland. A visit to the Great Barrier Reef Wonderland is recommended.
Follow the Bruce Highway along the coast as you head towards Airlie Beach, were you can relax for two days.
In the morning drive along the Bruce Highway to the country retreat at Henderson Park Farm for a true Aussie cattle farm experience.
After your morning catamaran transfer back to River Heads, you can travel along the Isis Highway towards Agnes Water. This will take you through the historic town of Bundaberg, the home of Bundaberg Rum.
Travel to River Heads, the departure point for Fraser Island. From here you will board the Kingfisher Bay Catamaran and be transported to the stunning Fraser Island and explore for 2 days at your own pace.
Visit Noosa arrive in Brisbane for an overnight stay.
The popular holiday playground of the Gold Coast stretches through the resorts of Coolangatta and Broadbeach towards Surfer’s Paradise. The fantastic each is a great place to learn to surf, plus there’s shopping, a vibrant nightlife and nearby theme parks.
Drive through Grafton, a graceful old country town on the banks of the Clarence River, before reaching the coast once again at Ballina. If you want to explore, head for the lighthouse on the rocky promontory of Cape Byron, which marks the easternmost point of the Australian mainland.
In the morning, travel along the Lakes Way, a scenic route through Myall Lakes National Park. Head past Port Macquarie. Coffs Harbour marks the start of the sub-tropical northern coast of New South Wales, and the mountains of the Great Dividing Range seem to fall almost directly into the Pacific Ocean.
Travel to Port Stephens, where the wide bay extends some 25kms inland and its calm waters and numerous coves are ideal for swimming, fishing and water sports.
Head toward Hunter Valley and enjoy time at leisure where you’ll have plenty of time in the afternoon to explore the region’s many vineyards.
Today drop off your car hire at Sydney airport before boarding your flight to Auckland. You will collect your car from Auckland and head north over the Harbour Bridge to the Bay of Islands.
