This coast to coast independent self-drive tour is the ultimate American Adventure. Drive a portion of the famous Route 66 – a true part of the American Bucket List, see towns frozen in time and scenery to wonder at. Take in the full range of American landscapes from the skyscrapers of New York and Los Angeles to the natural wonders of Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon and so much more.
Depart London. On arrival in New York later that day, transfer independently to your hotel. On day 2 enjoy the city of New York.
Pick up your car and depart New York for Philadelphia, where you may spend the morning exploring the historic district of the city. Then continue to the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C for your overnight stay.
Depart D.C for Gettysburg and visit Gettysburg National Military Park. Then head upstate to Buffalo and cross the international border into Canada, where the thundering noise and mist of Niagara Falls permeates the air.
Spend the morning sightseeing at Niagara Falls before returning to the United States, crossing the border and continuing to Detroit.
Travel along Lake Michigan and on to Chicago, where you can soak up the city’s highlights. The next day is at leisure to further explore.
A longer day’s drive will take you through Midwest farm country abundant in corn fields and dairy farms. Cross the Mississippi River into Iowa, continuing on to Sioux City.
Travel westward through the grasslands of South Dakota to Badlands National Park. Continue to the Black Hills, sacred to the Plains Indians and home to Mount Rushmore.
Enter the state of Wyoming, which has 12 mountain ranges intermixed with deserts and rolling grasslands; continue to Cody for the night.
Drive past the mountains in Wyoming to Yellowstone, Americas first National Park. See the immense geothermal wonderland including: geysers, waterfalls, wildlife and canyons.
Travel through Grand Teton National Park and see awesome mountain peaks towering over 4,000 metres. Later, arrive in the state of Utah and its capital, Salt Lake City.
Continue to spectacular Bryce Canyon, the multi-coloured world of sandstone spires and pinnacles known as hoodoos.
Depart Bryce Canyon and journey to stunning Lake Powell. Then visit Grand Canyon National Park. Stop at the Canyon rim to fully experience this mile-deep canyons gorges, rising spires, extinct volcanoes and, the winding Colorado River. Overnight in Flagstaff.
In the morning travel on to Las Vegas. Along the way, pass through Seligman, a town built along the famed Route 66 that looks as if it were frozen in time sixty years ago.
Travel to Los Angeles through the Mojave Desert. On arrival, pass through Hollywood and Beverly Hills, before reaching your hotel. Day 18 is free to explore at leisure.
Leave Los Angeles in the morning and travel north through Santa Barbara. Along the way, stop at an iconic California lifeguard tower made famous in Baywatch. Continue along the coast to Shell/Pismo Beach.
Make your way north to Carmel. Enjoy browsing the shops and galleries of this famous artists’ colony. Travelling further north, visit Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf. In the afternoon pass the valleys of Castroville and Santa Clara en route to San Francisco.
Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore San Francisco. Return your car at San Francisco airport on day 22 for your flight home.
